More about John
John, known to many as JVK, is a father of a nine year old daughter and also a baby girl born in May of 06 who has survived a liver transplant and going strong since December of 2006. John has been married for fifteen years and has lived in the
Madison area since 1982.
After being inspired to dive into soccer again after an exciting international game in
Chicago with
USA vs.
Germany, John started his soccer coaching career in 1992. John is always striving to learn more as a coach through many different courses and seminars starting with the
WSA
State "F" license. John has experience in all ages. From the youngest players to coaching high school (five seasons of H.S. completing his first at Fort Atkinson H.S. in 07) and even spending five years as a manager and coach for a local men's soccer team. John has also been involved in the Olympic Development Program.
John is a big soccer fan which has him visiting cities all over the
USA and in
Europe to see soccer attend clinics, seminars, conventions etc. from California to Florida to the Netherlands and learn more about the game and its surroundings. John is also collector of soccer books, games on video dated as far back as 1954 as well as other soccer antiques and collectibles.
Favorite club teams are
Chicago Fire, Bayern Munich,
Ajax of
Amsterdam. Favorite National teams are
USA and
Germany and of course
Brazil. Favorite players... All time favorite is Jurgen Klinsmann, current favorites include
Taylor Twellman of
New England Revolution and Justin Mapp of
Chicago Fire. Favorite coaches are Foppe de Haan, Bob Bradley.
Youth coaches that give John direction and encouragement are Tom Goodman of World Class Soccer and US Soccer National Instructor, Tony "Tosh" Farrell - Technical Co-ordinator of Everton Youth Academy and also friends Chris Panayiotou (MYSC Youth Director of Coaching) and Kenny Hills (Street Feet Soccer Academy) who share opinions, coaching ideas and also travel to soccer coaching schools, seminars and soccer events together.
John was on the USSF pro-soccer referee list from 1998 to 2005 refereeing as a level 5 /State Level 1 referee. At 2005 there were 2633 registered soccer referees in
Wisconsin and at the end of his referee career there were only 43 referees in Wisconsin at the State level 6 or higher. (1 being the top in the world)
John has been an official for games that have included great players such as Ben Olsen (DC United & US National Team), Josh Wolff (KC Wizards and former US National Team), Digital Takawira (former KC Wizard, Milwaukee Rampage and Zimbabwe National Team), Jamar Beasly (brother of US National team player DeMarcus Beasley), Jim Curtin (Chicago Fire) and current US National team player Michale Bradley (son of coaching great and current US National Team Coach Bob Bradley). And also great coaches such as Bob Gansler, former coach of World Cup 90
U.S. National team and K.C. Wizards "2000 MLS Champions" and Coach Fernando Clevijo who was a former
USA National team player and recently inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fameas well as current coach of Colorado Rapids of the MLS.
In addition to refereeing, John is also been a certified referee assignor and serves as the Director of Referee's for the MYSC (formerly Middleton and Yahara Soccer Clubs) and volunteers his time every season to give instruction to the new referee's of the MYSC In-House League.
While a board member of Middleton Soccer Club, John was involved in the merging of
MiddletonSC and Yahara into MYSC which is already recognized nationally.
